Blue Mountain, Miss., Apr. 11 - Services for Robert Bruce Gowdy, retired farmer
of Blue Mountain, were held Wednesday afternoon in Lowrey Memorial Baptist Church.
Pastor Joseph N. Triplett officiated, assisted by Pastor J. L. Pipkin of the Church of the
Lord Jesus Christ of Blue Mountain. Burial was in Blue Mountain Cemetery. He died
Tuesday night at his home here, one day after his seventy-eighth birthday. He
had been in broken health for a long time.
Born in Tate County, Miss., Apr. 9, 1878, Robert Bruce Gowdy, known as Bruce, was a son of Robert and Susan Owen Gowdy, pioneers of Blue Mountain. He was educated in the public schools and engaged in farming most of his life. He married Miss Lura Callicutt of Blue Mountain who survives him. He was a member of Lowrey Memorial Baptist Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters , Mrs. Lamar Bennett and Mrs. Claude Bennett of Blue Mountain, four sons, Ernest Gowdy of West Point, Miss., Rayburn Gowdy, R. B. Gowdy, Jr., and Lester Lee Gowdy, all of Blue Mountain in sister, Mrs. Belle Gowdy Jernigan of Blue Mountain, 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Bruce Gowdy was a good citizen. He will be missed by his whole neighborhood. He spent his long life in this community and he will be remembered down the years for the many deeds of kindness he did to all kinds of people in need of a helping hand. His passing ends his term of sickness and suffering. May his loved-ones rejoice in his rest beyond the river.
