Nancy Gowdy - Tippah, Mississippi
"I descend from John and Jane Gowdy through their daughter Nancy who married James Cunningham.  Their daughter Mary Jane who married Benjamin Franklin McAlister.   Ben and Mary Jane were my great grandparents. They moved to Tippah County about 1870." (submitted by Rosemary Hollis)

Mary Jane and Benjamin were my great grandparents. She was granddaughter of James and Nancy (Goudy/Gowdy) Cunningham.  Mary Jane was born Dec 2, 1838/39 Abbeville County, South Carolina, died March 31, 1915 in Tippah County, MS.  She and Benjamin are buried at New Hope Cemetery, Tippah County, MS. He was born April 6, 1939 Anderson County, South Carolina, died June 5, 1911 in Tippah County, MS, son of William Russell and Lula Cynthia McAlister of Anderson County, South Carolina.  See photograph of Benjamin Franklin McAlister and Mary Jane Cunningham.

Lula Cynthia "Sanca" McAlister was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin McAlister and his wife Mary Jane Cunningham. She was a great, granddaughter of John and Jane Goudy/Gowdy. My grandmother Lula was born April 6, 1879 in Flatwoods, Tippah County, MS, died April 21, 1946 in Memphis, Shelby County, TN. She and Willie Clayton were married January 18, 1905 in Tippah County, MS.  Both are buried in New Hope Cemetery in Tippah County, MS.

Donna (Gowdy) Newton, daughter of Herman Donald Gowdy, her dad was born "Goudy" but changed the "U" to "W" while in school due to kids teasing him with the pronunciation.  Herman's parents were Hermie Donald Goudy and Lura Lee (Nutt) Goudy.  Viola Goudy was Herman's grandmother.  Hermie and Lura Lee are both buried in Blue Mountain, Mississippi.

Herbert E. Gowdy was born February 27, 1898 in Blue Mountain, Mississippi and died August 6, 1982 in Memphis, Tennessee. Herbert had a son Herbert E. Gowdy born October 23, 1928 in Memphis, Tennessee.  Herbert married Betty (Gowdy) Stice.  Herbert died February 19, 1994 in Arlington Heights, Illinois.

Algie J. Gowdy was the son of James Gowdy and Rachael A. Jernigan and was born in Blue Mountain, Mississippi. Algie married and had a daughter Vera Juanita Gowdy.  Vera Juanita Gowdy married and had a daughter Leigh Willmore (born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1951.

OBITUARY NOTICE

HICKORY FLAT Joe Bernard Gowdy, 63, died Tuesday Sept. 1, 1998, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born Feb. 13, 1935, in Blue Mountain to Hermie and Lura Lee Nutt Gowdy. He was a self-employed construction worker and a member of Hickory Flat Baptist Church.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. William Phillips and Bro. Mike Beasley officiating. Burial will be in McKay Cemetery in Hickory Flat.

Survivors include his wife, Stella Shelton Gowdy of Hickory Flat; one son, Terry Joe Gowdy of Hickory Flat; two daughters, Tina Burks of Hickory Flat and Toni Gowdy of Myrtle; one brother, Donald Gowdy of Madison, Fla.; two sisters, Mildred Mask of Ripley and Anna Lois Caviness of Germantown, Tenn.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Mike Burks, David Burks, Alan Shelton, Bob Moore, Joey Gowdy and William Mask
